Also, I'm looking really to spend less than 20 quid a month, because I won't be using it very much I don't want to be forking out a lot for it. So any suggestions / advice would be much appriciated. I get the feeling that NTL don't have particularly good customer service, but apart from that are they ok? What about BT, or anyone else for that matter?
Many thanks.

I don't think my line can handle 8MB, although some sites say it'll cope with 4MB. However, at the moment it won't go higher than 512 (Pipex upped me to 1MB two weeks ago, but I see no difference).
Personally, I'm more included to go for 512 for just a tenner rather than a higher speed at the moment, as I don't use the Internet all that much these days. £10 for a 512 uncapped service is good enough for me right now.

I'm not sure on that one. I've heard Xbox Live doesn't use too much, but if you end up playing it a lot, it obviously mounts up, especially including your regular browsing etc.
When I asked Pipex for my Monthly usage one time, they told me it was just over 5Gb, but that was a heavy Month - lots of gaming (both PC and Xbox), lots of downloading and lots of browsing.
I'd guess you'd be fine with 1Gb, but you may want to get that little extra to be on the safe side as the charges for going over cost more than an increased allowance.

Personally, I don't know for sure how much X-BOX uses, but 1 - 3GB might not be all that much if you consider that every bit of data that goes though your line counts, be it email, web pages, MSN, Yahoo, etc.
I'd highly recommend an uncapped service, just for piece of mind and convenience. But, plusnet do offer a PAYG service, where you get 1 GB, but can pre-buy a GB for £1, or automatically use another as needed for £1.25 per GB.
But, for £14.99 a month uncapped from plusnet, there isn't really any good reason to go for a capped service from anyone else (unless the price is a lot lower or the additional services are to your needs).

Sure thing. You'l probably sign up before me though, as I'll be doing it after my holiday in August. You choosing the 8Mb service? Apparently I can't get the full 8Mb, but should have no problem getting 4Mb.

First one to sign up to ukonline refers the other so we both get a free month? http://www.ukonline.net/broadband/recommendafriend.php
Plusnet also have a package for £15 a month, which will be clocked to your lines highest ability (up to 2MB).
Pipex are good (I'm a current customer) but currently there are better offers available.
I'd suggest looking at the plusnet web site first, as their packages are pretty good, and they offer a "if you don't like us for 45 days we'll pay for you to go elsewhere". That said, once you've got broadband, Pipex offer a migrate-in for free offer too, so if you go with plusnet, don't like them, transfer to Pipex for free.
Of course, if you run your own web site, you might want to look into Freeola, as their web hosting is a pretty good addition to their broadband.
In general though, always check the terms and conditions before signing up to anyone, as the details I mentioned could have changed, or just be inaccurate, as I'm just writing out what I can remember, rather than checking it out for myself.
I'm considering migrating to plusnet sometime soon though, although I might opt for ukonline. Pipex just don't seem all that competitive price wise at the moment.
