Suddenly the 128 bit generation approaches and we are confronted by a pad with two triggers and two slots for rumble and memory. This was of course the Dreamcast pad. Sony took a back seat and just made an updated Dualshock pad. To me a dissapointment. Once again Nintendo churned out another wonderful controller. A c-stick all of the original buttons returned from the days of the snes and practically every button is analogue. Then came the x-box pad. Microsoft have got ot learn size isn't everything as they made the biggest console pad I have seen in my life. Nothing new here other than a stick which does the same function as the C-stick. It has also been said that it is practically impossible to rapidly press any one of the buttons.
Now the big question comes. What next. What will be the next invention for a games pad that claims to be the most influential gaming accessory ever. Any one got any ideas. Well that is my first forum written expect more in the future and hopefully they will get an ok response.
Anyway, I believe the future of padding (???) is tilt technology (that works!) and motion sensors. Possible also, a touch-screen pad, where the buttons change for each game. Maybe.
But I think it will end in holograms, and there will be floating buttons like Jonny Pneumonic!
By the way how do you run for a Notable. Do you just say it. Because if you do then vote for me!
Or do you have to go through Tony or something...please tell me.
We once had an entertaining discussion on Newbies and I recall that there was a lot of campaiging for newbie support, so who is it that actually is rude to them? Only a select few (of whom er-no is allegedly the ring leader, though I can pass no comment on such a statement).
Vote Gronti by the way...
About the controllers then. Well i'm assuming your a fan of the nintendo controllers, this I think I would have to agree with. The N64 controller could be said to be a bit bulky and perhaps the stick can wear your thumb or fingers down but overall I would say it is my favorite controller. The main thing about it is that all the buttons are well positioned and the stick is in the perfect place, not to mention the excellent trigger Z button. One great thing is that the stick never gets in your way when you want to use the D-pad so you wont mistakenly ruin your game by moving it at the wrong time. Another great thing is the ease with which you can move between buttons, A and B can easily be used both with a single thumb without mistakenly pressing the other. The Z button is perfectly placed because it gives the impression that you really are firing a gun and is in an easy to use position if you are aiming with the stick since it is right under your 2nd finger which is also giving balance and support to the whole controller. The C buttons are easy to use and it is even easy to get used to pressing the right direction, so you can easily learn to hit C right every time you want to especially with the large arrows which you can feel to find which C button your finger is on if you do get lost. The R and L buttons are perfectly placed to add balance to the controller while also being convinient to press when needed, and while the L button may be hard to use in conjunction with the stick at times you will find that you never need to use L and the stick since R does the same as L in most games where the stick is instrumental and even if L does have a seperate function it wouldn't be that difficult to learn a new hand position which allows easy access to all the necessary buttons. Another advantage of the N64 controller is that there are just the right amount of buttons, not too many so as to confuse you and plenty to cover any function you'll ever need quick and easy access to with the possibility of plenty of combinations to cover those more complicated moves like larger jumps etc.
Controllers are a big thing in the console industry and they may well be part of the deciding factor for the future consoles, so let's hope the companies keep making more comfortable and more innovative controllers.
Oh and Vote Gronti...
You are a very good writer... now, about this election vote... ^_^
Just kidding! It was a good read, and you're right, from the screen less Gameboy Pocket that was the NES pad to the amazing technology incorporated into the Gamecube Wavebird, controllers have taken quite a few stepos forward.
Lets hope they continue to do so for years to come to make gaming a much better experience...
Speaking of a better experience, wouldn't the FOG be a lot better with a Notable who could make a change... We don't want Newbie-hating psycho's representing everything we stand for... we want a friendly, good tempered, all round fun guy who contributes well to the site!...
...So vote 'The Game' this Election
