Born Brian Warner on January 5 1969 in Ohio, Manson moved to Florida in his teens and, after a time as a journalist, formed Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids in the late-80s. The band , like the gothic shoch rock star Manson, made up their names by matching the first names of female icons to the surnames of some of Americas most notorios criminals. Makes sence now!
The original band members included Zsa-Zsa Speck and Olivia-Newton Bundy. The Spooky Kids line-up saw Manson joined by Daisy Berkowitz, Gidget Gein and Madonna Wayne Gacy. In 1990, the band, with Sara Lee Lucas' help, saw them begining to record demos. They began to sell these on cassette at their live shows.
By 1992, the band were just known as Marilyn Manson. They had a large following around Florida. The following year they were signed to Nine Inch Nails record label and they were going on tour as support acts. That year, Gein was replaced by Twiggy Ramirez and that is when the controversy began.
In 1994 their debut was released, entitled 'Portrait Of An American Family'. This was a mix of metal and glam. Marilyn Manson was propelled into a million selling album act because of their live shows and gory, gothic videos.
In 1995, drummer Lucas left and was replaced by Ginger Fish, while Daisy was taken over by Zim Zum. Manson went up in the world and was made Reverend in the Church of Satan.
Their big breakthrough came with the album 'Smells Like Children' which contained a cover of Sweet Dreams originally done by the Eurythmics. Since then the band and especially the frontman, were everywhere.
In June 1999, the single 'Rock Is Dead' was featured on the soundtrack of the Hit film The Matrix. This brought Manson into the view of the wide-eyed public. In the November of 1999, Marilyn Manson released a live album called 'The Last Tour On Earth'.
In the year 2000, Manson had a supporting role in the film Jawbreaker. He played alongside his former girlfriend Rose McGowen. The rest of 2000 was spent recording a new album. This came as the dark masterpiece, 'Holy Wood (In The Shadow Of The Valley Of Death)'. This was the final part of a three part album that encompasses 'Antichrist Superstar' and 'Mechanical Animals'.
A novel was published in January this year which elaborates the themes of the trio of albums.
No doubt, Manson will continue to see how far he can push and continue to entertain the vastly expanding fans.
