Qualifying: Button's pole position boosts B.A.R
Race: Barrichello continues Renault's charge as 9 fail to finish

Jenson Button pipped Barrichello to pole position on a cloudy qualifying session that saw the top 9 cars split by less than a tenth of a second. It's Button's 5th career pole position, 1 short of the current SR F1 record of 6, held by De La Rosa.

Renault's relentless qualifying form continued with Barrichello on the front row and Pizzonia in 6th. Firman took 3rd on the grid ahead of Salo, who is the only driver to have not scored a point this season. World Champion Baumgartner is once again in the top 8 with 5th on the grid. A rare appearance for Panis in the top 8 with 7th and Verstappen completes the top 8.

It was perfect conditions for the race and it was the perfect start for Button as he took an early lead. Barrichello had a poor start and lost places to Firman and Salo off the start. Salo and Firman got into a big battle and Button started to increase his lead quickly.

Pizzonia was safely in the points in the early stages when he made his first key error of the season. He got it wrong by going too fast into a chicane and spun across the grass. Webber was the unlucky one as he smashed into him, ending both their races on lap 3. For those behind Webber, it was a big delay for them as the cars were blocking the track.

Lap 6, and M Schumacher, at the same place as Pizzonia, came too fast out of the exit of the corner and speared into the wall, which ended his race. De La Rosa had to retire on lap 13 when his engine let go in a cloud of smoke. That was the 4th retirement already and it was going to get worse as engines were under stress.

Montoya must have been delighted with the Pizzonia retirement news but his engine blew and burst into flames on lap 14. Then, a major change up front occured. Button, with a huge lead, saw his engine blow up on lap 25. This promoted Barrichello into the lead, having got past Firman and Salo, who continued to battle it out.

6 retirements and not even half distance yet but more incident was right around the corner. Lap 26, and Villeneuve was looking quick just after a pit stop and he was looking for a way past Ralf Schumacher. He over did it and spun. Klien smashes into his front wing, retiring Klien. Villeneuve needed a new front wing but on his recovery to the pits, he smashed into a wall ending his race.

Raikkonen was the 4th engine retirement of the race when his engine let go on lap 28. That's over a third of the field wiped out before half distance in the race. These retirements pretty much ended the race as a contest, although there were some late battles for 2nd place and the last couple of points finishes.

Barrichello's inherited lead on lap 25 was the last change at the front as Barrichello stormed to victory, only his 2nd career win. Salo held off Panis and Firman to take 2nd place, his first points of the season. Panis takes a much needed 3rd, ahead of Firman, who also needed the points. 5th was Baumgartner who was 5th for almost the entire race. Verstappen was a comfortable 6th to give Minardi a double points haul in Canada. Heidfeld (7th) and Pantano (8th) managed to hold off the pursuing Alonso and Karthikeyan to take the last points places.

PREDICTION WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Only 6 made predictions so the old F1 points scoring system applies. 10 for 1st, 6 for 2nd, 4 for 3rd, 3 for 4th, 2 for 5th and 1 for 6th. 1 bonus point for the tie breaker. Here are the results:

1st Shadow 10pts (29pts - +1m16.337s)
2nd Chris 6pts (20pts - +1m58.207s)
3rd Jae 4pts (14pts - +2m51.469s)
4th Badgerman 3pts (11pts - +45.295s)
5th Icarus 2pts + 1pt (8pts - +11.080s)
6th Shelljed 1pt (5pts - +2m06.531s)

The table now looks like this after Round 8:

1st Chris 52pts (3 wins)
2nd Shadow 45pts (2 wins)
3rd Shelljed 37pts (1 win)
4th Ineedsleep 35pts (1 win)
5th Icarus 31pts
6th Badgerman 26pts
7th Jae 25pts (1 win)
8= Foreman 12pts
8= Jules 12pts
10th Biggie Little 8pts
11th Notorious Biggles 5pts

So, a dramatic race and that's Round 8 completed. Montoya failed to capitalise on Pizzonia's error, so the gap remains at 13 points. Barrichello's victory increases Renault's lead from 18 to 28 points and Chris holds a 7 point lead over new 2nd place man Shadow.

Round 9 is at the Nurburgring for the European Grand Prix. We're approaching halfway in the season and the points become ever more crucial. Here is the current driver lineup for the Predictions: http://www.freewebs.com/gpsr/srf1.htm

It's been a strange season. One of the wierdest. In the past, a late charger comes through to win the Championship. Not so sure it's going to happen this time.
