Becuase they're a biting satire on the consumerist nature of America, and the whole sheeple element comes into it's own.
And, to be honest, I think zombies rock, especially the fast p_____ off ones in 28 days and the dawn of the dead remake.
Although Once Upon A Time in Mexico is a good film.
Edit - And John Wayne is a paunchy fool.
