Okay, is it just me, or does seem like the kind of stuff every schoolkid has been getting up to since the dawn of time, rather than the bad influence of telly shows? Just because they're using their mobile phones to film it doesn't mean hitting unpopular kids is a new thing. If anything, shows like Jackass and Dirty Sanchez are an extension of the kind of childhood japes that we all used to play at school, no?
Yet another OMG TV AND TECNOLOGY ARE RUININNG R KIDS FUTURES! story to chuckle at, in a world-weary, middle class kind of way.
Rest assured, if I ever saw anyone do anything like that I'd either get involved or call the police and have them arrested for assault.

Watch Sky News report on it.
The videos they seem to find are of chavs hitting perfectly innocent people and filming it.
There was this one of an old man on a bus and they just callously clobbed him around the head.

No, I'm saying that bullying has been going on since year dot. It always will. Filming a mate slapping a stranger in the face for the enjoyment of others is a new "craze", and directly related to the technology available. Of course, it's started from kids filming themselves bullying others, but it's supposedly escalating into a method of getting their 15 minutes. I'm unsure as to the true extent of it, but then again, I only heard of it 2 weeks ago, so it's a little early to tell.
The media are making it out to be a nationwide craze that's come from nowhere.
Are they just playing it up to make a good story to scare and thus interest people?
Or has it been around for a while, but for some reason suddenly gathered much more attention?

I found out about it from BoingBoing.net, a good weblog site. Jan 2005 is the first entry, and links to a Scotsman article. http://www.boingboing.net/2005/01/21/happy_slapping_is_sa.html Missed it that time.
Next appearance was http://www.boingboing.net/2005/04/28/happy_slapping_updat.html April, linking to the videos.

That's crazy, only the other day, in my head, I 'invented' the TV show 'ASBO IDOL'. Basically you have to go out and get an ASBO, with points scored for speed and originalty. Just being mouthy and violent wouldn't get you far, so you'd have to be more creative.
