There is no benefit to watching the theatrical version if the extended one is on offer. The theatrical version is considerably shorter and misses out some entertaining parts.

Yeah, but this had four films on it and in the shops LOTR 3 on its own was still about £9.99
This isn't Director's Cut - it's the whole, proper film they had to cut down to near-enough proper cinema times.

You do realise the extended edition came out around November which would have been about the same time? At that point the standard version (which had been out for quite a while) would have cost you only a few quid.
