Ask who won E3 a week ago and I would've said Nintendo - no competition, but that IGN article SSX Pro showed me was a bit of an eye opener.

It wasn't unbiased in the way SSX Pro had claimed, it wasn't any more or any less biased than I normally am but it made me realise:

Whoever put on the best show depends on what you wanted to see.

I was looking forward to the Gamecube. I really wanted to see the games that it was capable off. It impressed me to no end. I didn't care about what Sony or Microsoft had. I didn't even look. I instantly thought that Nintendo had it all in the bag.

Reading, article however, showed me that not all people think the way I do. The writer clearly didn't care all that much about the new machines. It was clearly a PS2 fan (who hid this with comments like "I love Nintendo games but".
Want to know how I knew he was being completely biased? Let's just say that it takes one to know one ;-D ) but showed that even the PS2 that had relatively little to show at E3 had impressed people. This writer didn't care what a machine being released in a year could do. All he really cared about the machine he had there and then and it's future. (Like I was with the N64 when the PS2 was being unvieled).

After seeing footage from all 3 systems I could see why different types of gamer would prefer 3 different machines.

No one really owned the show. All 3 companies did what they set out to do. Impress their own fans.

The IGN bloke was biased. He just said that the Xbox was his favourite to make you think overwise.

Either that or he'd just lost faith in Sony recently and had gone to Xbox and E3 changed his opinion again.

He was biased. I've read over it a several times.

If he'd given the Gamecube the favourable review then I might of missed the biased (the same way a PS2 owner like you missed it) but it's there.

Here's one bit of proof. He said that Nintendo's games were just a bunch of franchises lifted from older consoles.

He then went to hail the likes of Final Fantasy 10, MGS2 and GT3 as the most original and amazing stars of the show (when they're just franchises lifted off the PSOne in the same way except less inovations and new ideas.)

That was just one example of the bias in that article.

I'm not slating the writer for it because if I'd been writing that article I would've been biased in the same way (only favouring the Gamecube instead of the PS2) but all the same:

That article was completely biased.

Sounds about right.

Personally, I would expect it to be "Ninty's show". A show will usually 'belong' to any company unveiling a new machine, as that's where the interest will lie.

This year there were two, so the real question was who'd put on the better show out of Nintendo and Microsoft. In truth, I only ever expected one 'winner'. Microsoft may well have a very capable machine, but the fact is that Nintendo have a large and loyal following.

But at least Microsoft can claim first prize in one area. It must be the first time that any console manufacturer has shown new, 'finished' hardware at a major show... and had it crash.

Sony had a good, solid show, but the PS2 has been around a while now, and you wouldn't expect major. They showed what's coming (yes, Jax & Daxter looks great), and announced online plans and had online games up and running. Simple, steady, and all that was needed. Beware the sleeping giant.

All in all, I think fans of every format have much to be happy about, and much to look forward to. Personally, I can't wait for my X-Box to crash on me...

So we've basically deduced that it was a good show, with nintendo on top, but the PS2 overshadowing the X-Box, and giving us loadsa stuff to look forward to!! No?

The only place where I can fault Sony is before E3 began, at the pre-E3 talk thing...

They were just supposed to answer questions about their strategy, and when a question was asked to Sony first, and then Microsoft, the Sony rep shouted out that the Microsoft rep had stole his answer...

Not TOO professional. But the showing at E3 was great. They managed to throw in a few surprises, that Naughty Dog... Jac and Daxter? Something like that. Looked good too.

Square had their presense as well, and they certainly showed off the best graphics on the system... I wish Nintendo wouldn't be so big-headed and actually ASK Square to develop for them...

I would certainly put the PS2 above the X-Box at this time. The X-Box still fails to impress me, but Nintendo was all I expected it to be at E3, so that's kept me happy.

Err... that's it.

A PS2 fan, writing an article on the X-Box section of IGN? I doubt that. Just someone who has a favourite (X-Box), but isn't afraid to give others the credit they're due.

Just like Meka, and unlike so many others.

You can try to remain unbiased, but it isn't easy.

I've read a number of articles on E3, and the general impression is that it was Nintendo that everyone was talking about. Why? Well they've remained tight lipped since last Augusts Spaceworld show, so everything was new, new, new!

Microsoft, on the other hand have been showing of their games and box on every street corner, and as a result, they weren't showing anything new at what is generally considered to be the most important of the show.

Sony were professional. They showed what they had, and it was impressive, but they didn't have the 'new' factor in their machine, so it was going to be tough to get attention. The online news was well received, and they did show some very good looking titles.
