I've given up and gone with the all-fluid layout.

I've trawled the web myself and, as you say, it either fixed sides and fluid centre or all fluid.

The screenshot is of a working design apart from the side columns "overlapping" the centre.

In theory (I stress Theory, as I haven't coded anything yet)

Container div @ 100% page width. Inside centrally position another div (center box at fixed width using margins to center) the z-index right div & left div based on floats giving the illusion of 3 cols?

I've trawled every resource I know of (and that's quite a few), and can't find anything based on what your looking for. It's either fluid central col or all fluid? But then again, looking at your design, you could get away with the all fluid?

I'm intrigued myself now... Must find the answer.
