Been looking at this Tft monitor from Special Reserve,
http://specialreserve.co.uk/TFT_Monitor_17_2999_r.html . Now I am new to buying TFT's and thought it would be the logical upgrade from an old 15" CRT, which I think is going to die sometime soon. Also the fact that these TFT's consume a lot less space is a plus as I will more than likely be taking it to Uni at the end of the Year. Problem is I've been told that TFT's are generally sucky for playing games. Is this true? Can anyone give me any advice in this area, because as I have said this is potentially my first TFT purchace. Cheers in advance.

The biggest problem with TFTs and game playing is the response time. A year or so ago 25ms was the average response time, which can cause ghosting in fast moving games, kind of a trail of the previous image.

Quicker response times have virtually eliminated this problem now though and anything 16ms or under will be fine for games for most people.

I have a 12ms TFT that I bought a month or two ago, and I can't notice a hint of ghosting. Games actually look much nicer on it than they did on my old CRT.

edit: too slow

I've been using two LG1710B's 17" 1280x1024 @ 75Mhz 16ms TFT's for over 3 years now and never encountered any issues whilst playing games.

Only things to remeber are:

1. Response time, the lower the better with 16ms being the absolute max for gaming. There are TFT's out there with 8ms response times, though 12 seems to be the new average.

2. DVI. You'll get a better display and quality if you use DVI to connect your GFX to your TFT.

3. Pixels. TFT's are designed to run in their native resolutions as the displays are pixel to pixel, so if your's runs at 1280x1024, then you should run everything at this resolution (or in window mode for games), otherwise the image become blurred.

4. Contrast Ratio. Anything below 500:1 isn;t worth bothering with. 600:1 is fine for most things.

There are better TFT's out there for theprice your looking at. Personally anything by LG rocks due to LG/Phillips making most of the TFT cells on the planet and concidered the best there is.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
Easy and free service!
I think it's fab that you provide an easy-to-follow service, and even better that it's free...!
