2 million pre-orders have been recorded for the Nintendo DS in Japan. Rather stunning amount as there is just 1 million being shipped.

Dunno about the states. There's been no official confirmation from Nintendo. Nintendo have though opened another factory in order to ship enough copies to everyone in Japan.
