Do any of you know what your parents/grandparents did during World War 2, or any war for that matter, or were you in a war? I know that my Grandad on my Father's side was a pilot in Africa during WW2, but I don't know what my other Grandad did - will have to ask my Grandma (she's the only one still with us, so it'll be a bit tricky to ask the others).

I have quite a big interest in war, inherited from my Dad. I swear there's a syndrome amongst middle-aged men that causes them to become obsessive about war because of our grandparents and what they did.

Yep definitely, love the stories. I wish I had asked my great grandad about his role though.

That sort of stuff is quality though.

"Did I tell you about the time I grabbed a tank by the barrel and swung it over my head it broke down the fortifications in the Sudetenland? No? Well I did you know. It was a cold November night...Men smaller than I were keeling over - they said the Devil himself was sucking the life from the air..."

I love his WW2 stories.

My maternal grandfather was in a tank regiment that took part in D-Day. I believe he was court marshalled not too long afterwards for disobeying orders.

Paternal granddad was a miner. I used to think "Lucky sod; he never had to go to war". Then I saw the conditions he worked in. Not so lucky.

My great grandad was in a specialised unit that fought against gorrila warfare tatics and my grandad fought in Africa and it appears he managed to catch a lot of diseases whilst out there. Still manages to tell of another disease he caught every visit it seems. :)

My grandad was headmaster of a school so he never went overseas, but he was in the Home Guard (Dad's Army style).

My Grandad was a Captain in WW2, he got hit in the back with some shrapnel, survived, and it was never removed. That's all I know.

I've got a medal which I saved from being thrown out when my Grandad died, from the Mayor of the Borough of Shoreditch, where my Dad's family grew up, and there's a street in Shoreditch that shares my family surname. Coincidence? The medal is from WWI I think, I'll try to find it tomorrow.

My grandad was in the Dunkirk war, and got some sort of medal for saving a comrade, I believe.

My Grandfather was a Desert Rat. Survived, and died when I was 17.
