The subject says it all really, there's not much else i can think to tell you guy's. Although i am doing this because i want to seek a neutral opinion to end an on-going arguement between myself and a friend.

I will be adding my point of view later.

One thing, PLEASE REMEMBER TO SAY WHY!!!!!!!!

I have to agree. American Beauty is one hell of a film. The storylines pure genius and it makes a change from all the shooting in films you see.. but even this couldn't resist a pistol :)

However I'm still a fan of the Matrix

American Beauty classic line "I don't think you'll forget my name this time"

Great film!

Overall I think Goodfellas must be one of the best films ever made. The acting by everyone was superb, especially Pesci in his psycho character. He makes you laugh till you cry. De Niro, everyone knows about but Ray Liota defies all expectation. He really took in his character well.

The script by Shrader is one of his best. There are memorable one liners in the film. The 'What the f*@#'s so funny about me?' from Pesci is hilarious. Plus it all flowed so well. About 3 hours of film just flies past.

The directing from Scorsese is what you would have expected from him. The film flowed so well thanks to him and for anyon who has seen the film each scene are very memorable. There was nothing extremely brash about the scene but they were so well made. The music he's the atmosphere and all the characters are so different and fun. Jimmy Two Times was a hilarious inclusion. He was in the film for 10 second but he was soo funny in just one line. 'I'm gonna get the papers, get the papers.' The photography are also beautiful, for example, the snapshsot car explosion from the beginning. Th cinematogrpahy is also wonderful. Especially the part when Liota introduces the audience to the 'family' the the camera moves stylishly around the room.

Ha ha ha ha, oooh dear! Anyhow. Most of all the best thing about the film is that you could watch it again and again without getting bored. You root for the bad guy and hate the goombahs. This film is a true classic.

The ony negative point to this film is teh DVD you have to flip it around half way through! That's not funny

The Best film ever made is American Beauty because it is a film which takes a snap-shot of society today and turns it on its head. There you have your average middle class family with their gay neighbours on one side and your homophobic regimist on the other. Then what does it do, it says screw this, we know that these people cannot be this anally retentive and be happy, so they let the lead character experiment with his own persona and outlook on life. That is a stroke of sheer genius. Kevin Spacey plays the most immpresive character I have ever witnessed in a film, the man goes from being your average jounalist to being a cashier at a burger bar, because he can!! In the process bribing his company out of two years worth of wages and benefits (which are things like health insurance in america!!). Obviously his wife isn't too pleased as her perfect world and exterior image are degrading with every step, so she has an affair, and even contemplates killing herself, then her husband to prevent him from damaging her any more. Then you have the daughter who hates them both, well portrays herself that way anyway, but inside just feels a little neglected, and hurt that her dad pays more attention to her stunning freind. The stunning freind is stereotyped to perfection, the sultry, confident, wannabe goddess who is actually putting on a front to cover her insecurities over her own self-doubts and lack of confidence.

There is so much more depth that I could go into with this but its a forum and it's getting a bit long, but this would wipe the flor with the Matrix anyday, even though there are no computerised special effects!!

The Matrix is good because...
it has great special effects - bullet time is amazing
lots of action - lobby scene the best thing ever
a thrilling storyline - sythers betrayal, the whole concept of a computerised world, the messiah (Neo) and the rescue of Morpheus and the ending where they all risk death
the music - Clubbed to Death (the lady with the red dress scene) and the music in the Lobby all set the mood

It is a great sci-fi movie! How can you question it's brilliance?!

Well now, let me see. The best film ever? Ah yes, of course, how could I have forgotton it. Way back in the year of 1986, a year in which I was fast approaching 4 years old, a sequel was released that made the world stand still. It's stunningly attractive use of models, computer graphics and minimal storyline made the film an instant success. Some say that this sequel was probably the best of the four films in the series. It's influence stretched far and wide, producing mass production of action figures, t-shirts, collectables and most recently, a couple of computer games based on the series. What am I talking about? Well, it could be none other than Aliens, the fast, action-packed sequel to Alien. Just one look at the grotesquely horrifying face of the alien can still cast it's fearsome presence over many of todays children and adults alike.

The storyline was, admititly, fairly weak. But did we care? Heavens no! The film had enough action and suspense to carry it through and come out on top. The creation of the alien creature was a masterpiece and set the standard for alien based films of modern times.

Films will come and go, and continue long after you and me have left this mortal coil, but a few will live on in our memories, to be relived over and over again. Aliens will always be there to scare your grandkids when their young, and that is why it is the best film ever. Think about it.....

You guys have ended the arguement, thx.

But one last thing if i may, the Matrix (which was what the arguement was about) is brilliant because???

What is it that makes me, and so many other people think the Matrix is the best film ever??? I know its the bullet time thingy and the lobby scene but is there anything else!!!

Thx for help again, Jac
