POLICE were today quizzing a man after a savage hammer attack on a 16-year-old youth in Queensgate bus station.
Late-night bus passengers looked on in horror as the assault left the teenager unconscious in a pool of blood on the floor.
The victim was said to be ''critical but stable'' in Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, today after being transferred to a specialist head injury unit from Peterborough District Hospital.
Today, as detectives and scenes of crime officers worked at the station, bus companies had to switch services to other platforms as bays two and 15 remained cordoned off.
Shocked commuters using early buses this morning saw evidence of the attack on the blood-splattered ground.
An 18-year-old man was arrested at an address in Gunthorpe, Peterborough, last night, on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm.
He was being questioned by detectives at Thorpe Wood police station, today.
The issue of security at the bus station, which underwent a £250,000 revamp in 2003, has been raised on several occasions.
Chief Superintendent Paul Phillipson today said officers were taking "every step possible" to preserve the crime scene and seek out potential witnesses.
Andy Campbell, spokesman for Stagecoach, which operates bus services from the Queensgate station, said: "Despite the two bays being closed, we have minimised disruption to services by using different bays."
Detective Sergeant Melanie Dales, who is part of the investigation team, said: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the Queensgate Bus Station around this time, who may have seen the assault, or what happened in the moments leading up to it, to contact us.
"We need to build up a clear picture of what happened prior to this incident, and any information could help us."
City councillor Nick Sandford has raised fears over security and dangers at the bus station in the past.
Today, he said: "It is appalling that something like this should happen.
"There are obviously major security issues that need to be addressed. CCTV is not enough – we need security guards.''
Newport bus station used to be (and still is to an extent) the place where tanked up wa**ers would go to pick fights. Great when you're trying to get home from the cinema...
> Thiefs have there hands chopped off.
That law actually works quite well in Dubai. People leave their shop doors wide open and wander off down the road and they have no problems with theft because people are too frightend of the above consequences.
Thiefs have there hands chopped off.
etc..
Just like the good old days.
> the government should actually do something about it.
any suggestions as to what exactly they should do?
Its worse in other places, but the government should actually do something about it.
