Pizzonia perfect in dream start to season

Qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix was wet and miserable with only 3 cars having near perfect conditions. It just so happened that 2 out of the 3 cars were Renaults. They didn't get pole position, however, as Verstappen stormed through to keep the Renaults off the top and take his first career pole position.

The Renaults of Barrichello and Pizzonia were in 2nd and 3rd, the reverse of Australia with Alonso in the McLaren 4th, Pantano 5th, De La Rosa 6th, the World Champion Baumgartner in 7th and Button in 8th place.

Full Qualifying Results:

20th Salo (Biggie Little) 1m52.673s - (+2.346s)
21st Firman (Notorious Biggles) 1m52.866s - (+2.539s)
22nd Heidfeld (Shadow) 1m52.963s - (+2.636s)

In the previous 3 years in Malaysia, there has never been a dry race. So, it was a surprise to see it dry for the race this year. This means that the grid probably won't be a fair reflection of everyones race pace.

It wasn't as action packed as Round 1 in Australia but with soaring temperatures, it was going to be a tough race for the engines. Michael Schumacher was the first to make a mistake as he ran off the track on lap 2.

Salo only managed 3 laps before his car developed a water leak and retired. He has failed to finish a race this season. Pantano then had a spin trying to keep pace with the leaders on lap 4. Panis also had an off on lap 5.

Alonso was the first of the engine retirements as his engine blew on lap 7. The race settled down a little with the drivers holding their positions. Baumgartner was the next to throw it off the track with a spin on lap 13. Ralf Schumacher managed to get himself ahead of Barrichello when Barrichello had a go back, resulting in a Ralf Schumacher spin and Barrichello losing time on lap 16.

De La Rosa ended another miserable race day for MG F1 when his transmission failed on lap 18. Again, the race started to settle down with pit stops taking centre stage. Ralf Schumacher was pushing too hard to make up time and spun on lap 29.

Pizzonia was the quicker car and found himself over 40 seconds ahead at this point of the race but he ran off the track and lost time on lap 41. This allowed Verstappen to leapfrog Pizzonia for the lead as Verstappen was doing 1 stop to Pizzonia's 2 stop strategy.

Also on lap 41, Klien's engine blew resulting in retirement. Michael Schumacher found himself off the track again on lap 42. Montoya retired on lap 43 with transmission problems. Heidfeld and Pantano were having a scrap, Heidfeld tried a move but had a small spin on lap 45.

Sato ended Williams' day when his engine blew on lap 47. Ralf Schumacher was in the wars most of the race and he had another tangle and spin on lap 51 with Baumgartner.

Pizzonia was obviously the fastest car on the track and easily passed Verstappen with a few laps to go. Verstappen had no response. Pizzonia went on to win the Malaysian Grand Prix, his 2nd Malaysian Grand Prix win (having won in 2004), his 4th career win and he joins Villeneuve as the only other driver to win 2 races back to back. He'll be looking to match Villeneuve's hattrick of wins by winning in Brazil.

Verstappen takes a well earned 2nd with a solid drive. Raikkonen again had a quiet race, but is doing something right as he keeps moving up places, finishing in 3rd. Barrichello completes a great day for Renault with 4th place and 5 points. Fisichella takes 5th place for the 2nd race in a row and Webber gets himself and Red Bull off the mark with 6th. Villeneuve scores more points for Ferrari with 7th and Firman crosses the line (just about) for 8th place. Firman was battling with Villeneuve in 7th but his car began to slow down, gifting Villeneuve 7th but he did manage to come 8th.

Qualyifying okay for B.A.R but the race was quite poor, both of us dropping out of the top 8.

I am kicking bum bum on the predictions though.

Oh well, will predict on this one when I get back from the footy today.
