"Ken Kutaragi, president of Sony Computer Entertainment, launched a scathing attack on Microsoft's Xbox console, claiming "they have no games".
Usually a quite and reserved man (well, for a president of a multi-national corporation, anyway), Kutaragi is not usually known for outbursts like this, but the Xbox has clearly touched a nerve. "Microsoft was finished before it even got started. They have no games" said Kutaragi in an interview with the Financial Times. He also claimed that Microsoft have "put themselves out of the game" after their E3 showing. Microsoft had an impressive E3 show, but it was overshadowed by Nintendo's monster games and the news that the Gamecube would go on sale three days before the Xbox in the US, for $100 cheaper.
Kutaragi reflected on the Xbox E3 offerings, citing them as "disappointing". He also added that "Microsoft does not understand the entertainment business". Still, there's no doubting the sheer power of the Xbox - it is still the most powerful console out there. The Xbox WILL have some great games at launch, although they might not be around at the moment. Games like Unreal Championship and Championship Manager 4 will ensure that the Xbox will not be completely ignored and with companies like Sega, EA and Capcom on Microsoft's side, Kutaragi may end up eating his words.
Ok, so maybe you could've read it there, but honestly not all of you would have done so, or been able to read my comments! So, what does this mean? Well, at first impressions I thought maybe it'd make more sense if you replace the word Xbox with 'PlayStation 2' and the word Mircrosft with 'Sony', but I doubt anyone here would believe it, although it'd be more true to life.
Methinks Sony is running scared of the Xbox, although they know the PS2 is selling well, the PSone is still unlawfully outselling everything under the sun! But Xbox will be impressive and a comment like this is surely a deterant, and will have a rippling effects on the games industry - expect Bill Gates and his army to be waltzing round each and every city in the world, preaching the good word of Xbox - deary me, it's getting worse than the elections! Either way, this will surely spark a reaction from Microsoft and the rest of the 'big players' and I could bank on the Xbox suddenly becoming the most wanted games machine. After the astounding GameCube of course!!
Anyway, due to Nintendo's unrivalled showing at E3, all the rumours are quashed about it being canned - never mind Kutaragi!!! But remember, last year at E3 it was Sega who impressed the most with some startling titles, but look what happened to them? However I doubt Nintendo will do achieve anything less than market leadership with Gamcube - they have the money to promote the thing like crazy, and already have the respect of gamers across the world. So, whatever happens, have fun, thanks for reading, and don't shot me in the foot - it'd hurt!
