Well I would say it's a case of Chinese whisper rather than the tabloids itself, this does sound rather shocking in many ways what happened here, but there you go.

You know they're all drunken 40-year old racists who see anything which remotely resembles "turrists" they go out with torches and baseball bats to beat people up.
They probably seen the "paed" part and assumed it was someone who trained paedophiles or something.
