Got my new Acer Travelmate 8104 yesterday and it is brilliant.
However, the monitor resolution is so good it hurts my head to read anything on the internet.
So, anything I can do to make it bigger without changing the resolution (which I can't get right.. mainly as it is a wide screen).

in IE, click View > Text Size and crank it up a little.
Nah, I tried that but it just looks squashed.
It only takes up half the screen.

You tried upping the refresh rate so the image is more stable?
Right click desktop, properties, appearance, font size.
