before buying metal gear solid 3, will i need to play the first and second ones to understand what is going on and what it is about. all my mates have got it and all say that it is a great game (which i no it is) and i really want it as they keep speaking about it.

I'll help however. You don't need to know anything about the previous games, as there is a choice at the start of either "I like MGS 1", "I like MGS 2" or "This is my first MGS game". The cutscenes apparantly change according to your knowledge.

MGS3 comes chronologically before MGS1 and 2 anyway. So you'll be fine.

I hate when they make prequels to games (good or not) but still call them "3". Ditch the number, and BANG, instant prequel.

But there wasn't really anywhere that MGS could go from 2. They could do far more with a prequel yet also managing to tie up some loose ends from 1 + 2.

I'm not objecting, I just think the "3" is lame. Same goes for the first three games in the Resident Evil series.

The order goes: 1, 3, 2

Just buy it and be happy.

After all it is techinically a prequel to the Metal Gear games aswell.

It's got the 3 on the end because it's released after the other two.
