Starting to reek of Spielberg kid, but the 3 - 4 frames of war machine (It doesn't look like a tripod, but it looks pretty damn cool) menacing a ferry. Shame the trailer gives away the entire way human technology is rendered useless.
Teaser 2.
War Machine.

A winning combination, just hope there isn't too stupid family giberish.
I remember saying way back that it would involve:
Absent father figure, shining god lights, learning to be more tolerant through the eyes of a child, child registering fear in close-ups.
And it's happening, before my very eyes.
Might be ok, but might be Spielberg on auto-pilot

It was just a thought, and the "They're already here" tagline fits, as does the earthquakes. We know not there's nothing more that (possibly) microscopic life on Mars, so aliens from said planet just doesn't seem to fit in a contemporary setting.
*shrug* Just an thought. I'm probably way off the ball.

Why not? A surface world and a subterranian world. :D
Whatever. Just an idea that was floating round my lack of sleep addled brain. I'm still looking forward to it immensly.
I read the book in school, had to rush it a bit mind.
Though, this looks completely different so yey.
Completely excited by this movie. Moreso than Episode III maybe.
1. It means Spielberg would have to completely change the solution to the Martian problem for the ending as it was written would have to completely change.
2. As has already been said, it's meant to be about inhabitants from one world invading another. An underground species just wouldn't fit right.
Would it?

Or set off an EMP to render all techolony useless, making us even more of a pushover. I've a sinking feeling the aliens in the remake are going to be subterranian.

That's one of the problems I have with the movie. It's obviously a product of the cold war, as in the martians are basically the ruskies (and they come from a red planet, ho ho ho) and the underlying message that God will save the day. Still, I've seen in countless times.
The book is very good, and still very readable today, over 100 years since it was first published. There's a Christopher Priest book called "The Space machine", a cross between "The Time machine" and "war of the worlds" telling the story of the lead up to the invasion. It's an excellent read.
