Has anyone popped into their SR shop and tried out the GBA, if so how good is it?
What are the best games. And in your honest opinion would it be suitable for my 6 year old son for his birthday?

The reason i ask these questions is that i was never a fan of the GameBoy and i was wondering if the hype is justified.

If your son loves Pokemon and Sonic then this is definately the machine to own. The GameBoyAdvance can't match the Dreamcast in terms of Graphics but in terms of playability it will be up there with it. Its also going to be the first machine that will be supported by all the major games manufacturers including both Sega and Nintendo.
As it has no competition as such, it should be around for many years to come.

It will take some time before we get Dreamcast quality graphics on a hand held because the Processor would have to be shrunk, and their would have to be some mechanism to stop it overheating. The power requirement of the system would have to be low, and the screen resolution would have to improve. Basically this means the GameBoyAdvance is as good as its going to get in terms of handheld gaming for at least the next 5 years, but it will probably be around for the next 10 years.

The Gameboy Advance is more powerful than a SNES and will be great for the younger generation as well as the older.

There are games aimed mostly for the younger gamers being released but games like Tony Hawkes are being released for the older.

All the old Gameboy games work so if you're buying it for a Pokemon fan then there are already a number of games out that will work on it.

Sonic will also be on it for at least one game which I'm sure'll be great!

I'm looking forward to June 22nd.

Thanks for that, i'm sorry to say but we must be the only family not to have a Playstation.
We have PC's and a Dreamcast but my son loves Pokemon etc and would love to have Sonic to carry around in his pocket.
I asked the question on how good it was because of how basic it's predecessor is. I dont want to blow £100 on something he wont like when he compares it to his DC

Of course it wont be anywhere near as good as the DC but will it be the best handheld ever released, remember the Atari Lynx or the Game Gear and even the Neo Geo pocket.

I popped into a local shop, and tried out an import GameBoyAdvance the other day and it was superb. Its like a SuperNintendo (SNES) but in the palm of your hand (although as the machine matures the games will get to be more technically advanced .

I would say its ideal for a 6 year old, although that is assuming he wants a handheld console...if he wants a console that plugs into the TV then getting a playstation may be a better option.

I only tried out F-Zero Advance which is a great little racing game, although other than that Mario Advance is supposed to be very good.
The games I am really waiting for are MarioKartAdvance and Sonic Advance, although these may not be realeased for a while yet.
The games will cost around £30 each, so if your son hasnt got a playstation yet then that would probably be a better purchase as the games are cheaper. If your son has a playstation then by him the GameBoyAdvance its a great little machine, and will be around for years to come.

You could always ask him what machine/games he wants... that way you wont by him something he doesnt enjoy. Ild take him to a SR club shop, while having a look around...the staff will probably allow him to have a go on the GameBoyAdvance and he'll then tell you if he likes it, if he does you can go back to preorder it when hes not around.

Im saying this because parents have a habbit of buying the oldest, worst and yet most expensive games around. They try their best, but games are a very personal thing some people like racing games others dont, so its best to ask the recipient for advice.

I hope thats helpful.

Summary:

GameBoyAdvance is great
Buy Mario Advance or F-Zero Advance

Better Still ask your son what he wants :-)
