If you haven't already (or you don't go in the crap that is general chat) - whip yourself over to this article.

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/article/145/ntl-broadband-upgrade-speeds-from-8th-march

And then get excited.

Because you can upgrade now.

Just shifted myself over to 2mb smoothly.

Oh yes.

Disclaimer: I am in no way endorsing the use of NTL, I am merely stating a fact for users of the service. Freeola is amazing, or something.

That Down2Home thing is still as crap as before. I've just downloaded a 3mb song and it's hardly changed at all!

According to it I've only downloaded 838kb since 11am this morning!?!

Doesn't want to work for me. It won't install properly.

I can't find any others that work properly either. :c(

-EDIT: I downloaded the full version and it worked, woooo. I thought it was strange as I had it working before.

Is anyone getting their full speeds yet with NTL?

We've been upgraded by the download speed won't even get above 1MB! It was 1012 kilobits last time I tested it! My mate on 3mb gets the same.

EDIT:

Downstream 1929 Kbps (241.1 KB/sec) 2083 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 190 Kbps (23.8 KB/sec) 205 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Maybe it was the server I was testing it on!

So all their services will be capped soon.

ie the 750K one will be capped at 1GB a day so really should go for the 2Mb one anyway?

Also roughly what kind of activity would cause me to go over 1GB. I'm guessing I could surf the web pretty much all day, play a few online games, download a few music tracks and still not go over the 1GB limit.
That about right?

Finally, there was talk of them releasing software to monitor the bandwidth being used by the broadband connection, that out yet? If not anyone know of any software that will monitor the usage of the connection over a home network?
Cheers

Q. Will there be usage allowances on the new services?
Yes, ntl’s usage allowances for the new services are as follows:
• 1Mb - £17.99 – 3GB per month
• 2Mb - £24.99 – 1GB per day (same as 750K usage allowance)
• 3Mb - £37.99 – 1GB per day (same as 1.5Mb usage allowance)

What happens if I reach my usage allowance?

Customers with the existing services or 2Mb & 3Mb (1GB per day)
Ntl reserves the right to contact customers who regularly exceed their daily usage allowance, where such excessive use impacts the quality of service for other ntl broadband customers.

Customers with the 1Mb service (3GB per month)
Ntl will be monitoring across the network to identify customers who routinely exceed their data allowance, but not enforcing this allowance until later in 2005. Before that time, ntl will be deploying new capabilities that will allow each customer to view their usage levels. Thereafter, customers who exceed their data allowance in any given month will be given options, which may include, for example, the ability to:
• Upgrade to a tier of service with a higher usage limit
• Choose to be billed for any incremental usage above their limit
• Choose to use the service for the remainder of the month at a lower speed

For further information on usage allowances please refer to ntl’s User Policy.

I don't think they are enforcing the rules properly until later on this year.

Whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooosh! Now on 3Mb yay!

FWIW, the capping is only enforced for persitant abusers and if nobbled by NTL they will either throttle you down to 56k or allow you to pay for the extra bandwidth.

1MB - 3GB Cap (They need to do this or people would just downgrade to the cheapest tariff as 1MB is fast enough for most.)
2MB - 30GB Cap
3MB - 40GB Cap

I'd never come close to 30GB, that's a lot of porn, warez and gaming!
