I'm looking to get a laptop before I go to uni, however I'm not so educated when it comes to which makes are good and bad as I've always had custom jobs for my desktops PCs so haven't really experiences any different manufacturers.

Most of the latops on eBay are Dell, IBM and Toshiba, which are all pretty big makes so I'd guess they're probably rather good.

Anything I should watch out for and is particularly good/bad when it comes to a laptop?

Also how much should I expect to pay for a fairly decent one?

Anywhere other than eBay that I should look?

Thanks for your help.

Since I don't plan on going Euro-jumping I guess a desktop aint a bad option.

Just managed to get my crappy computer working marginally better too.

paradox you should check with you uni to see if they have a deal with toshiba, my university does and quite a few other uni's do too, you can get a very good laptop pretty cheap around £600 (or at least i assume thats cheap for a laptop i don't know i don't buy them)

I'd probably go for a desktop too.

I'm going to buy a laptop but only because I already have (a very crappy) desktop which my parents also use.

Plus, I'm going to Germany in Spetember for a year so can't really sling a desktop on my shoulder.
I might get one of those chain things though that phillip mentioned.

http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk (or maybe .com) is pretty good site.

Yep. Although no laptops were stolen last year in halls (loads have been stolen this year when people's houses have been burgled,) you can never be too sure. Just get one of those security chains though, it plugs into the side and you're not getting away with the laptop unles you carry some heavy duty bolt cutters with you!

Just get a TFT screen and the desktop won't take up much more desk space than a laptop. Plus it's easier to upgrade in the future and far far cheaper, plus it's better for games which you will play loads of because it's so boring at times.

You reckon Phi11ip - it just seems a Laptop is more, well, studenty heh.

However it does seem lately that Desktops are cheap as proverbial chips. Might be the way to go I guess. Harder to nick too.

Just get a desktop, you don't need a laptop for uni and it's FAR FAR cheaper. I foolishly bought one and although it's great, I'd rather have bought a desktop.

I got the one at the bottom. Done a bit of shopping around before i bought it and it seemed well good value for money.

They don't look bad - how much would I be looking at for one of those?

eBay's never heard of that one, nor have I for that matter.

Can you find me a site that gives info about it please?
