Finally decided to leave 56k behind and step up to a broadband service. I've managed to find a 256k service for the same price as the current Dial-up service I have. ( No mention of Names :) ). This package comes with the modem, filters and necessary cables etc. My major concern is the fact that I have two computers on a Cross-wired network, and am wondering how the sharing of the connection will affect the speed, espescially playing online games like CS:S. Now I know you can share a connection and have been told that you can specify who gets the most etc. but is there an option to say that if the other computer isnt on I get the full amount etc? Also I'm assuming that the computer with the modem has to be on for the other computer to use the connection? Any help is appreciated.

We have computers connected to BB via a router I dont think that we can choose who gets the biggest share of the connection though, also because the router is on its own power supply not all the computers need to be swiched on. we have a 1mb connection and even when all computers are on we see no depeciation in connection speed.

I would imagine that your computer with the modem would need to be on in your set up to establish the connection.

Hmm a router could be a better option. I'll see what people have to say about my set-up first before i buy one :P

Mmm... I recommend buying a router, for ADSL, they're quite cheap - even the ones with modems intergrated.

Which I recomend buying, just saves any hassle of compatibility issues between them.

And they all run at full speed...

256k Download? You're not going to have much fun trying to play counter-Strike with that speed I'm afraid.

£23.99 per Month gets you Pipex's 512K uncapped service - which should be seeing a free upgrade soon, due to BT whacking everything up to 2Mb.

Well BT upped they're 512 to 1MB, actually.

But Pipex sounds like a plan... Been on BT for a while, but their plan seems to be costing a bit more than they advertised, around £30 a month, not £20.

But that's probably because I download about 30GB a month...

256k is plenty, even 150k is enough at a pinch and a good server. You only get lag at pings of around 160. 256k is fine.

It should be fine on servers in the UK or surrounding area, but when things get hectic, or someone from the other end of the world joins, it's going to choke a lot.

Still, if you find it's too slow, you can always upgrade to the next package :)

Probably will only be playing friends hopefully. Upgrading to the next package probably isnt an option cus we're only getting this cus its the same price as what we already have. Theres no chance of us paying any more ;^)
