Windows has been asking me to download this for ages but ages ago when it was first released someone (On this forum) told me not to download it, so can anyone tell me whether I should or not?

It says it reduces the risk of viruses, worms etc so why should I download it?

Thanks!

Looks like MS will insist you have SP2 from April 12th if you use Windows Update! http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2aumng.mspx

The only problems I have seen with SP2 is where the user had some history of having problems applying earlier Windows Updates. As it looks like it's only a matter of time before you go SP2 I would suggest people apply it themselves when they have time to sort out any issues that might arrise (they do for some people) rather than have to install it in a rush.

yopu can turn all security fartures off (apart from like patches) it just defualts them on. Apparenty SP2 runs great on a newly wiped hardrive or a new pc but on one with existing things on it can muck it up.
I havent got it yet, cba.

I've had it since it came out and I've never had any problems with it. Quite a few people say they have though :/

If your using a wireless network then it might cause a few problems to begin with but they can easily be sorted.

I've got it on all my PC's and laptop and I've not had any problems other than having to set up the wireless network again on my laptop.

I have a copy of windows that has sp2 built in to the install. It works fine, never had driver problems or anything.

Windows has no control over the BIOS whatsoever. You may be thinking of the security measure it implements to ensure that untrusted processes can't access certain areas of memory.

I read somewhere when it came out that you could not access certain areas of bios or things like that, for the general PC user this is fine as it would probably stop them from damaging the pc, but for people who know what they are doing, it can stop them from changing a few of the settings etc to optimise the pc.
