E3. The show has come to an end. And what a show it was too!
There can be no doubt in anybodys mind that Nintendo stole the show with the unveiling of the Gamecube and further impressive titles on show for the GBA.
Sony too, had a strong presence at the show, and were hoping to show that they would have the software to compete when GameCube, and X-Box arrive worldwide within a year.
Speaking of XBox, it was there too. But you'd expect that, Bill Gates has carted this box under his shoulder to every show imaginable over recent months.
In fact, lets start with the Xbox. It got off to a poor start, in many peoples opinion, with their pre-show conference said to be uninspiring, with only Halo getting a cheer. Worse still, one of their demos failed to load. Given Microsofts reputation, this won't do them any favours whatsoever. A US launch date and price was given, November 8 at $299, not bad, but there was no mention of Japan or Europe. The appearance of the console isn't winning many people over, and the controller is rather poorly designed too, from a gaming point of view. Apparently it makes it rather tricky to rapidly press any buttons! But games is what it's all about, and at least microsoft had some of those worth showing!
Star wars games always create interest, and Microsoft had a couple to show off in Obi-Wan, recently canned for the PC, and a version of the recently released PS2 game, Starfighter. These impressed, but most of the talk when it came to Star Wars was regarding a different platform.
Oddworld was there too, bound to generate interest, simply because of the way that it was withdrawn from the PS2. To be quite honest it doesn't look any more impressive now, than it did when PS2 screens were shown!
Of course Halo was the one game that has already made quite an impression, and now that some lucky people have got to play on it, they're rather pleased with it, very pleased, in fact!
further to these games it is apparent that Microsoft have a strong level of support, with EA promising 10 titles, 3 exclusives from Capcom, and news from everybodys new favourite 3rd party developer, Sega. And the title that was most talked about? Jet Set Radio Future, without a doubt.
All in all I'd say that they showed some impressive software, but as a company they lack warmth. people find it hard to like Microsoft, whereas people 'love' Nintendo, and they 'love' Playstation. This may come in time, it may have helped if they had something jaw-dropping to show, but alas no. There are other shows though, and Microsoft will make an impact on the games industry when it's released. Whether they'll be around for the long haul, I'm not sure.
Moving swifly on to Playstation 2. This was always going to be tough for them really. We know what the PS2 can do already, whereas Microsoft and Nintendo had brand new consoles to show off. The answer? Hardware news! "If they can show hardware, so can we", must have been the thought behind the pre-show conference. The big news is that PS2 will be online as of Autumn this year! They seem to have firm plans for the online side of things too!
When it comes to games, Sony knew what the people wanted to see. there was new stuff from Metal Gear Solid 2, plenty of GT3, and a large helping of Final Fantasy X. For those that like to knock Sony's machine for it's wealth of sequels they'll be pleased to know that WipeOut Fusion was also on show, and a version of the old classic, Spy Hunter. Of course there were original games, notably Herdy gerdy, and the new offering from Naughty Dog, Jak and Daxter.
Finally, Nintendo. It can be said without any doubt that E3 was Nintendo's show. The majority of the interest was in the games to be show for the GameCube. Almost every game shown off has of a very high quality indeed! If we are to believe that the GameCube will be the ultimate no nonsence games only machine that Nintendo would like, this is a good start. Nintendo spoke of their philosophy, the 'Nintendo Difference', promising innovation with their new systems.
There was no Mario for GameCube. There may be at SpaceWorld, but his ain't SpaceWorld, so we'd have to be satisfied with Luigi. And who wouldn't be satisfied with Luigi after seeing the Ghostbusters inspired Luigi's Mansion? Waverace showed some remarkable water features too, almost believable! Those that like to beat Nintendo with the kiddy stick may not have liked to see Eternal Darkness, RavenBlade, and Kameo, all games clearly aimed at an older age group. Those fans of all things cuddly, may have been impressed by Pikmin, a kind of strategy game about a spaceman, and helpful lil' creatures!
Did I mention a Rogue Squadron 2? This looks excellent! It looks almost movie perfect, and the scale of it is awesome, Start Destroyers are huge, as they should be. I'm looking forward to this!
The GBA was also out to impress, and would certainly have achieved that with Wario Land 4, Mario Kart Advance, and the tilt sensitive Diddy Kong Pilot. All very good indeed!
So, summing up, I'd say Microsoft have a lot of work to do still to win people over, Sony were solid, and Nintendo awesome. It'll be an amazing few years for games fans!

Well I was extremely dissapointed that I didn't win with my E3 topic about happyness, but I looked on the filmaday winners and I have won there so all I can say was:

I will admit that Nintendo blew Microsoft away at E3, but thats what we all expected anyway. I do not think that they stole E3 though. I just think that it was more or less handed to them. Sony didn't really have much to say other than the broadband/hard-drive announcement, what else can be expected they don't make thier own games. MGS2 has already been announced along with GT£ and all the other major apps. I have been left with a feeling of what next for the gamecube. I mean what happens after these games have been released, will thier be any more??? At least with the depth of developers for the PS2 and Xbox, there will be enough games for years to come, but what else for the gamecube. There hasn't been anything new release, just a new slant to old games. Luigis mansion will be nothing more than mario with a green suited plumber instead, no?? Zelda will be Zelda!! After dark will be Perfect dark!! Donkey Kong Racing will be Didy Kong racing, Mario will be a Mario game, does anyone see where this is going yet???
That was basically it for decent games on the N64, where does the gamecube go from here on, that scares me, i don't want it to fail but it seems to be heading down the same road as the N64 and the only good games will be sequels. I t will suffer the same as the N64, starts off well, but then what???
