Because he's adopted Beckham as his son, on the sly. And he's probably going to play Wright-Phillips on the left instead of Downing. It's like he's got this list of players who deserve to play for England, and works through it in order, regardless of position. I bet if Gary Neville gets injured he'll play Downing at right back, and then if a central midfielder like Lamps gets injured, it's Andy Johnsons turn in central mid.

This isn't related in any way, but Martin Jol has become my favourite coach in the Prem. Simply because of his comedy "Yah, for suuure" in every interview. I am perfecting my impression of this. Go Jol.
