Ok my son has a thing that keeps changing his home page to a search engine type page we have tried Spybot S&D and Adaware to remove it and add remove programmes but its still there how can I fix this problem with out a FORMAT.

Nimco is right. It is perfectly possibly to use a Windows PC with Internet Explorer without getting spyware, just through a working knowledge of where spyware comes from and a bit of common sense. However, you will massively decrease your chances of getting spyware if you switch away from Internet Explorer, either to Opera ([URL]www.opera.com[/URL]) or Firefox ([URL][/URL]).

I have all of those (maybe not so much on the common sense). Still accumilate a bit of adware.

For porn, use Limewire or something of a similiar sort. There's also a few sites there.

Eh we actually have all these things installed (except the list of NON spyware Porn sites) on all our computers, even a popup blocker, but even with all the protection I have come to the conclussion taht you are never 100% safe as some smart a##e is out there trying to find a new way to cause havoc IMHO

Common Sense.

It doesn't require that much effort, just simple, common sense things - don't click links in popups, don't download ActiveX components from untrusted sources, don't download anything from untrusted sources for that matter, beware of adware-funded programs, etc.

But you only really need to run them to get rid of the stuff. I know it isn't impossible to avoid. But you have to be damn careful about it. A carefullness which most people can't be arsed with.
