A friend and I were talking today about donating our bodies to medical science when we died. Although for some reason I'm somewhat selfish over what happens to my body when I'm dead and no-longer-living, I know it's important for medical advance and if my messed up mind and body could be of any use, then [edit- stupid spelling]dissect away.

My friend agreed, but pointed out he would never carry a Donor-card, but just have it know he wanted his body donated afterwards. I asked why.

He said that he's always scared that if something happened to him and he was in a critical condition, what would happen if the doctor operating on him had a close friend or relative that needed a part of his body? Would the doctor deliberately decide not to help him back to life or even kill him off?

Perhaps a little paranoid, but it's a very scary thought. So here's the question.

You're a doctor, and someone you love VERY dearly is in dire need of some sort of transplant. You're standing over someone who has exactly the transplant you'll need for your love, who is in a critical condition and WILL die unless you operate quickly.

What do you do? Do you deliberately let him die so your friend will be saved, or do you save the person?

Morallls away!

I signed my body over to medical science. I did on the internet when I applied for a credit card. True. So my name's on the list as it where. If I can't be any use when I'm living, I may as well be some use when dead.

The answer below this is a good one - I'd nick it if it wasn't too obvious.

I'd donate my organs to science but they would be no good to someone as a transplant. I think I've already worn out all the important organs.

I'd perform the operation to the best of my ability; it's someone else's loved one I'm operating on.

Well whatever you choose in that situation will make you feel bad. You could just let both die, but i dont think that would go down too well...

The thing that worries me about hospital is that super-bug which you can contract whilst there. Of course you can anywhere, but levels are significantly higher in hospitals. Not to mention other things that could happen whilst your there. Just imagine being operated on by a real life Dr.Nick Rivierra (from the simpsons)...

"hey, my good friend Mr.McKreg, with a leg for an arm, and an arm for a leg..."

As for when I die. Depending on if i suddenly uncover some fact of death, i would probably choose to be buried. In resident evil they said that your brain carries its electrical charge for months, so maybe you could live on in your mind...Probably not, but worth a try i guess. I believe that we exsist as mind alone after death, the body being nothing more than a vessel for physical exsistence whilst were alive.

I would recommend watching "Faces of Death". Lots of scenes of death, some fake, some real, but really touches you on the subject of death, and changed my opinion most definatly. Its not some sicko death thing, its more of a documentary (from the 1970's) with a funny guy called Dr.Gross, which was banned until recently. Dont watch it on shrooms like i did the first time, very mind bending. It has an unbelieveable atmosphere, and is definatly worth watching!

Don't doctors ever look at ethics as part of their billion years of training? If not, they should.

I think your average doc probably leaves his emotions behind when he's 'on the job'. If it was me, I don't think I could cause the death of one person to save the life of a loved one. But that's just me.

Oh, right.
The one about me being a doctor... looking down at a lovely pair of unconscience organs.

I'm actually thinking about doing Medicine after my Politics/History degree.
