Disney and Columbia TriStar have gone for 50GB Blu-Ray (no surprise as one's owned by Sony).

Paramount, Universal and Warner Bros have opted for the 30GB HD-DVD.

Apparently it's all going to be decided by whichever format the porn industry decides it likes the most.

Yes, despite being cheap and decent.

Yeah, but still, VHS is a dying format.

VHS to DVD - big step in quality and no rewind malarky.
The only advantage I can imagine this new format having is for holding series.

I can see it sort of taking over, but VERY slowly.
Basically, pure DVD players get phased out over the next 3-4 years and get replaced by these new ones, that play old DVD's as well.
And these old DVD's gradually get phased out the same way...

But I still don't see a point in these new ones other than recording purposes.

Better to use for TV series DVD's yes.

Playing a standard movie off VHS and rewinding's hardly a pain.

Then again I can be bothered to get up off the sofa/couch and move unlike many.

Nah, it's because DVD is much better to use.

You can jump to exactly what you want to watch without any rewind/fast forward crap, that's why CDs took over from tapes.

Although people shell out 17 quid for a blockbuster with a few crappy extras (oh a few trailers) rather than get it on VHS for 8.99.

Go figure.
