Fair enough. I just find the style of Meshuggah more appealing, plus I find the idea that they have no bass player and they have an 8-string guitar instead very interesting.
It almost sounds like a journey the way it keeps progressing, which is what I was getting at with the repetition in I; the riffs used are very similar and if you're not paying full attention then you might not realise that it'd changed.
I mean, it was just a comparison, but I'd heard BRI before I and I thought that BRI did it so much better and made I sound quite boring really. I know they're different (sub) genres; Meshuggah being more about brutality/heaviness and Opeth being more melodic/theory based and progressive etc etc, but I think BRI makes I sound boring.

Where have people got this idea that "I" is repetitive? I have to disagree with your comment on the weakness of the singer. I think he has a much better voice for this kind of music than singers who tend to screech.

Softcore poof :p
If you listen to Black Rose Immortal by Opeth, that's how I think a 20 minute death metal song should be done; loads and loads of time changes, different riffs, leads, (intricate) harmonies (which add craploads of melody which I just doesn't have) and constant switching between acoustic and distorted guitars and between growls and clean vocals. It just gets boring otherwise. They repeat stuff for a minute or so but after that they move on and don't come back to it. It keeps it fresh. The rest of those bands tend to keep their stuff shorter and sharp. Napalm Death are the most similar really, and all their songs are like 4 minutes maximum.
I don't like the Meshuggah vocalist either, he sounds like he's trying to shout as deep as he can. None of those other band's vocalists I listed could be described as shouting (except Slayer), it's mostly (the death bands anyway, admittedly some of the black bands do adopt a more screachy trebly kinda thing) are growling straight from the diaphragm. That guy's just doing it from his throat and I think that sounds rubbish. Sounds like he's got some effects on it too but I could be wrong there since I know nothing about vocal effects.
Just my opinions anyway, but if you like it then hey.
Sorry for hijacking your thread crossbob.

Pretty much, can't see why you don't like "I" then. However its your choice. Do you like Meshuggah at all?
