So, how do you do it? It's not every day you sprout another site, and when you do, you want it to be the coolest thing ever. You want it to be 'the' it site. You want people like Zeldman to come to it and go; "Wow... I wish I could do that."

You want links to you're site from Andy Budd, from Airbag, you want your site to be raking in the applause for it's concise use of web standards, it's beautiful pictures and layour, and it's wonderful content.

But before all that, (and if we're honest, it'll always be the first thing that either pulls or repels visitors) you need a name.

For me, I suck at names. I've run through about 7 different domains in the space of about 18 months, some of which we hardly even up before they were pulled to pieces and replaced with a link to my newer site.

Man, I need a name. So what do you do to name your site? I mean, I could always go down the road of naming it by me, but to be honest, "lindsay.com" hardly has the same attraction as "zeldman.com". It's just so hard! And then you have to decide if you should / can have numbers in it, and, if so, then do you spell them or just write them (three or 3). I mean, I know if I do it by myself again, it'll end up being something stupid like "id8.co.uk" (blatant rip-off of iD). And then if you go down the initials root, you have to think of the connotations. I mean, if you're a family web-site, like Yahoo! you don't want to be calling yourself CU.NT, do you?

Ugh, the choices defile my widdle brain.

Think of a good name.

Then forget it because it's already been used.

Simple.

Do what I do when naming something:

1)Look into Latin/German/French/Spanish for a relevant word.

2)Rearrange the letters of a simple word, or spoonerise it.

3)Create an anacronym.
