I’m thinking upgrading around June, I’m thinking of going new Asus Mobo with SLI, but I have been hearing that the new cell chip processor that will be in the ps3 is 200 more times powerful then any processor on the market today http://www.playstation3extreme.com/PS3_Specs_Info.html Now I cant really think that this is possible. That would make it around 300-360ghz, which I think just a fantasy for the time being. Now I know the Cell chip is supposed to be fast but I would like a good estimate of you guys. If this is true I would rather hold of until the Cell can be integrated in to PC systems.

In looking at that Scan dual Xeon SLI system, I'd be surprised if it could get higher benchmarks than an FX55 and SLI. Simply because the FX55 is the better processor, games are very rarely multithreaded and the memory bandwidth of an FX55 is twice that of the Xeons.

There is no way i will be able to afford the AMD FX range let alone dual xenon’s. I’m looking into the 3500+, but I know they do different chipsets, which one will be the best? I know the ASUS board I want is socket 939, so any other processor suggestions are welcome. Remember they will drop in price by the time June comes.

That sounds suspiciously like Physics to me.
:)

I understand it though.

Theres lots of facts & figures being thrown about regarding cell processors, 99% of it not coming from the people who matter though so really we don't know how it'll perform yet.
Either way as NB said, you wont be seeing one powering a PC (with it still being compatible with current PCs).

Well, then clearly you haven't read enough about the Scan.co.uk Cobra 3XS-SLI.

Stats (from Custom PC issue 015 - Scan's site was pretty useless on everything except for the SLI cards) -

CPU - 2x 3.4 Ghz Xeon
Mobo - SuperMicro X6DAE-G2 (not small form, mind)
RAM - 2GB Corsair
Graphics - 2x 256MB GeForce 6800 GT
Sound card - Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS with 8-channel support
Hard disk(s) - 2x 74 GB Raptors, 1x 300GB EIDE Maxtor DiamondMax 10
Optical Drives - Plextor PX-712
Case - Silverstone Temjin TJ05
Cooling - 1x 120mm exhaust fan, 3x 120mm intake fans, 2x Intel Xeon HSFs

Well, ya see, there are dual Xeons. Bloody expensive though, for that little bundle of joy. Scan sell two models, one singular CPU system for £3,288, for the two CPU's, it's an extra £500, taking it to £3,758.

But don't buy it. It's pretty early in it's life... And, to be honest, it's not worth £3,758. Yet. The technology has yet to exploit the power of dual processors, so wait a while, and you'll be happier.

No more reliable than your advice of Xeons. Firstly I'm not aware of any Xeon boards with SLI, and even if there was, when it comes down to dual processor based gaming rigs Opterons are the way to go because they are Athlon 64s deep down.

However, since the vast vast majority of games are not written multithreaded (Chronicles Of Riddick and Doom 3 being the only ones I can think of) then the best single CPU around is the one to go for, in this case money allowing, an FX55. Or in a month or so, the FX57. Back in real life land, that'd be a regular Athlon 64.

Screw the Cell. Stupid talk about it. There is a chance that it has some specialist instructions that can be performed much quicker than an AMD or Intel chip, but not at that sort of speed. Oh and since it isn't x86, Windows isn't going to run on it which instantly voids its use for any PC games. If it ends up in PCs, they'll most likely be running versions of Linux.

As for that page, well, some of the stuff is true. Like Toshiba being the folk making the damn thing. Research costs of $400 million could well be accurate. But super fast fibre optic lines? Bit OTT when you consider that the copper wires used in ADSL struggle to give ping times of less than 25 ms. Or are these going to be super long cables as well that run from the Sony HQ? Because you know... fibre optic cables can't really be bent much or else the internal reflection that makes them work screws up and the light leaks out, depending on the angle and refractive index.

Gist of post: Cell is over-hyped baloney.

Ooh, what a reliable article.

Get SLI, get some good Xeon processors and splash out on a pair of graphics cards.
