It's easier for Columbo to figure out. Gun in mouth, suicide. Gun on floor, possible homicide/"my wife" anecdotes. Columbo likes homicide, he's on PAYE.

It also destroys the basic conscious thought centre of your brain, so you're gauranteed not to feel anything and then be dead before you know it.
Blows the back of your head out (they aim upwards) which is pretty much guaranteed to finish you off.

If you mean suicide, there's a good chance a bullet to the temple will deflect. You don't get that problem by taking out the back of your head.
