Right, as many of you may have seen I know pretty much nothing about computers.

A year and a half ago my parents got me a Dell Dimension 2400, mainly as it was quite good value for what I wanted it for. (Internet, writing essays and storing music/pictures).

However, I kind of want to play new games on it now but this system isn't that great for it... so I'm going to upgrade it as best I can. I probably should just use the money to buy a mac or something but my parents would go mental, probably.

Here it is here http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Dell_Dimension_2400_Cel_2_20GHz_128MB_40GB

I have only have one slot for memory, so I'm thinking of getting a stick of 512 RAM, plus I need a really good graphics card.

Erm, so please help tell me what I need and any suggestions. Plus, do I need a new motherboard?

Maybe you didn't know what you were doing.
The fact you think the "3000+" label on your AMD means that it's capable of 3GHz would seem to suggest this is the case...

Is that right, yea i spose so...but are Intel's capable of O/Cing much, iv always found it really difficult to get one to O/C and remain stable...

Well, yeah the Intel would reach higher speeds, since it's already got a 900MHz headstart in the first place. Performance would probably be tighter.

Anyway, this is off the point.

If Sheepy is to use his existing motherboard, he's going to have to make sure it has an AGP slot, otherwise gaming on it is out the window.

They have a groove in the middle but it's offset so you can ensure you get them the right way around.

Lol, so true. And with such cooling, AFAIK, an Intel will O/C higher...

Yes it is easy...simply pull out the current 256MB (Store in an anti-static bag in a box somewhere) and then buy two 512MB sticks and put them in each slot...its simple...just push them in and the clips will come down to grip each side...if they don't you can either give the clips a little press or you are doing it wrong...have common sense, line up what fits with what fits!

This is not true.

I didn't (or don't :P) know much about computers but I managed to fit in some new RAM. Trust me, it's REALLY, REALLY easy.

By sufficient cooling you mean vapor phase change.

Yes he has got a good point...but I would suggest if you are going to get a new motherboard...buy an ASUS or something similar which supports AMD chips, then use an AMD CPU coz they are simply better.

Example: Pentium 4 3.0GHz (Pretty near the limit, not much room for overclocking)

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ (Operates the same as a Pentium 4 3.0GHz at only 2.16GHz but is capable of being overclocked (with sufficient cooling) up to an 3.0GHz, which will operate better than a Pentium 4 3.0GHz)

But I understand this is expensive and if you do not want to replace the processor, get a motherboard with a Pentium 4 socket.
