There are various guides online as to what to stop and what not to. A bit of common sense is always useful.
For actual applications, do Start > Run > msconfig > [Startup]
Try searching online for program names if you're not sure what to disable and what to keep. Googling for the program names will usually give you a link to a page which tells you what the program is, and whether or not it's safe to disable.
How do you stop processes from starting when the computer starts up? And what are good to stop?

It does help to free up RAM without a doubt so it does have an effect on performance. Plus I am a picky f**ker and everything has to be [----|----] or I aren't playing ball.
