Yo, monkey_man here.

I mentioned ages ago that I was going to make a website for users to download member's music in return for donations to the charity of their choice. Well now I'm thinking about it again and putting together designs and stuff, and I was wondering if there are any issues (not obvious, and I have thought about this in-depth) that you think I might have missed. Also, do you think it's a good idea? It'll take a bit of work, but it should be cool. Cheers.

Oh, specifically I'm thinking about legal notices, that sort of thing. I'm not going to have copyrighted work hosted, and there'll be 'report this artist' buttons here and there to cover naughty people.

Sigh indeed. When you referred to the Oxfam link I thought you meant provide another commerical download service, only for amateur music.

*sigh*

It's actually very simple. You, an artist or band, make an account. Upload your own music. People download it and/or donate. I'm not doing it for the competition, it's just a happy little coincidence that I acquired the skills to make this sort of thing right after I actually had the idea (I did forget it at first, then it came back and I was like "yeah, I can do that now"). So why not?

Erm, "a bit of work"? You do know out of all the online music providers, there are only two or three "real" ones; for instance, Big Noise, Coca Cola etc. are all using the same services provided by OD2. I doubt a single person can start and maintain one.

Not pay, donate. By a curious twist of fate, I don't know how to make it to accept payments to Paypal, etc and do all the database stuff in one swoop (to do with submitting forms to their secure servers), so downloading and donating have o be kept seperate. What I thought of doing is contacting charities, or using the info from forms on their websites, to have an area for donating on each artist's page, with their preferred charity at the top. That way I control where the money goes to, so it can't be scammed.

The incentive is the chart. There'll be a top 10 built into the design, and an area for viewing stats on most popular, most viewed, etc. Featured bands will also come into it too. Oxfam already run a service like this (which I only found out about just after I'd decided to do this a while back, the barstewards), so it's not like nobody would use a service. Just got to market it right and make sure there's no way of abusing it.

Is it all just stuff from unsigned bands etc. Like people who have their own bands and want to be heard?

I doubt anyone would pay for it seen as its just amatures. Plus there are places like that which offer music for free.

i don't know if this would be the same issue with a music website, but i suppose it's still copyrighted material

i remember a guy who set up an emulation website and asked people to make donations for the websites maintenance (hosting ect....) and that they could also download the files as well after donating. Well the website was eventually closed down because they said it was charging people to download copyrighted material

i know you said copyrighted material won't be allowed but if people are uploading files then it's bound to get added and if copyrighted material isn't allowed would the site get much traffic?

I'm redoing pocketmonkey too, to include some of the ideas from that. I've actually designed it and started working on some of the PHP, but I do tend to start an idea, get another idea, then move on to new idea, repeat...
