A free demo of Half-Life 2 has been released. Featuring some of the amazing digital actors and physical gameplay that has made Half-Life 2 the leading contender for Game of the Year 2004, the demo takes players through some of the early levels of the game and later transports them to the area of the game known as Ravenholm. The demo is available at ATI.com and requires a Steam account to install."
Why on earth is a steam account needed to install a demo?!?!?!?! That's utter stupidity.

I started it and it said it would take 1 hour :/
I could go up the shops, buy it, complete it, then get a refund in that time.

Good point. Should have thought of that yesterday, but was tired and grumpy.
Another angle could be that it will have patches and probably a bit of advertising so having people log in to steam will be a good way to get the patches to just auto-install when they are released.
I'm surprised they are releasing a demp as most people have got it already cause of it being such a antisipated (spelling?) game. I assume it's more for people who are questioning their computers ablitiy to handle the game. inm which case they should upgrade, not play a demo.
