I'm slightly concerned that my CPU is somewhat hotter than it should be. It's an Athlon64 3200+. It was overclocked to 2.27GHz (from 2GHz), and running at 63C, so I've just dropped it down to 2.1GHz, and it's still running at 60C. It is at full load the whole time - running WCG.

I've got what I would have thought would be a fairly good setup for PC cooling - a Thermaltake Xaser III supertower with all fans running at full, and a Zalman flower CPU cooler (the AlCu one) with that fan running at full as well. Any ideas why it's running so hot and how to cool it down without spending too much - v skint student here!

That's a whole lot better on the CPU. It'll drop a further degree or two if you have it at full load, then turn off for a couple of hours two or three times in the course of the first week. Thermal cycling it's called, makes it more effective.

What motherboard do you have? High motherboard temps could be to do with where the sensor is on the board. Or it could be something to do with the BIOS, the MSI Neo Platinum lately had temperature readings that were way off, so badly that people just ignored them. A BIOS flash later and they were fixed.

I changed the thermal grease from the crappy stuff that came with the Zalman heatsink (and I think I put far too much of it on anyway) to my mate's Arctic Silver 3.

I also cleared up a lot of the cables inside and removed the baybus from operation to reduce the number of wires and to ensure the fans always run at full speed.

And whilst I was there, I removed all the dust from the fans.

I'm still getting 49C though for the CPU - and 37C for the Motherboard (case) temp - any ideas?

That's still quite high. I have case temps, or motherboard temps, the other one I'm monitoring anyway, of mid twenties.

I dropped my case temps by around 4 degrees just by tidying the cables up a lot, tying them onto the chassis and replacing ribbon cables with rounded cables.

Also, I would turn the fan at the top round, so that it blows out. You'll be getting positive air pressure at the moment, too much so. By turning it round you'll get 4 in and 3 out if my arithmetic is correct. Also, heat rises, so a top fan blowing in just sort of blows the same air back down again. Changing it's orientation ought to get more hot air out.

One of the other solutions is to get a big heatsink, like a thermalright XP120. But you can only go as low as your case temps, and they are high, so work on them first.

The motherboard temp is 40C. Not sure how to find out the case temp. The case has a sensor connected to a baybus jobby (all fans set to high though), and I've put the sensor on my graphics card - it's registering 47.7C. There are 7 case fans - if I remember correctly, 2 in at the front, 2 in at the side (1 blowing cold air onto the graphics card, and 1 blowing cold air onto the CPU fan/heatsink), 1 in at the top, and 2 out at the back. All fans running high speed - standard fans that came with the case.

The temps will be lower when idling, but that doesn't really solve the problem.

What is the case temps? What are the fans in and out of it like?
