I'm slightly concerned that my CPU is somewhat hotter than it should be. It's an Athlon64 3200+. It was overclocked to 2.27GHz (from 2GHz), and running at 63C, so I've just dropped it down to 2.1GHz, and it's still running at 60C. It is at full load the whole time - running WCG.

I've got what I would have thought would be a fairly good setup for PC cooling - a Thermaltake Xaser III supertower with all fans running at full, and a Zalman flower CPU cooler (the AlCu one) with that fan running at full as well. Any ideas why it's running so hot and how to cool it down without spending too much - v skint student here!

Find-A-Drug puts the processor under full load.

Run prime95 or something like that.

It's not actually too bad - all the case fans are 21db fans. The loudest thing is the CPU fan which is about 23db I think. It's only the CPU fan I can hear.

49 degrees under full load is perfectly acceptable, and won't damage your processor in its usable lifetime. I'd be more worried about the horrific racket coming from seven 8cm fans running at full tilt.

Left it on overnight at full load and this morning the CPU is at 49C, and the motherboard is at 37C. I don't think I'm gonna get a lot better than that. To be honest though, I'm not unhappy with that - it dropped 12C just by re-greasing and adjusting the cables a bit.

The CPU temp reading from the BIOS and program could well be correct depending on what your heatsink is. That is the temperature at the hottest part of the processor, much warmer than the heatsink will be. Also, if you have high case temps then high CPU temps are to be expected.

I have a bit of the same problem with my 3200+, mine says it is running just under 60 in a program i got with the motherboard and the same in the bios but with my case i had a thermometer which slotted between the CPU the heat sink now that says at the moment 37.1, which one should I trust?

Yeah, it is the heating up and cooling down. Only needs to happen a few times inside the first 200 hours to get the best out of the paste. After that leaving it on permanently won't do anything to the paste.

I'd suggest perhaps doing a search, either through Google or on various tech forums to see if the K8V has a reputation for off temps.

For the thermal cycling, can I just turn it off overnight to achieve the same effect? I'm using the Asus K8V SE Deluxe motherboard.

Also, I checked all the fans, and the one at the top was blowing air out, so it was already 4 in and 3 out.
