OK, firend of mine what to upgrade his PC, but only has a £300 budget to get :

Mobo
Ram
Processor

and possibly

GFX Card
HDD (May leave him with his struggling 20GB as have a couple of free 300GB SATA's coming my way soon and will drop one in for him so the mobo should have SATA 150 support)

His current set up is an old Dell Dimensions XTS system with P3 600, 256 PC100, 20GB HDD, ATi 9500Pro

What would people suggest?

Like to move him to AMD (XP) and at least 512 Ram. Not overly concerned about the graphics as the 9500pro still cuts it in places and supports DX9, but he's not looking for a HL2/D3 monster.

Only concern I have is the current Dell case. Are these a mare for fitting new mobos into?

If so, I'll need a nice, cheap sexy case too.

OK, quick questions...

Semperon - Good or Bad?
X600 PCI-e Good or Bad in comparison to 9500pro?

Looking at:

Gigabyte GA-81915p-G Mobo
128MB PCI-e X600 Pro
512 PC3200 Samsung DDR
16x DVD-RW
520 P4 2.8Ghz LGA775 1MB Cache

= £336.34

-or-

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe nForce2 (Socket A)
GeIL 512MB (2x256MB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS2.5Ł57
AMD Athlon "Mobile" XP2500-M Barton 266FSB (Socket A) CPU - OEM
Thermalright ALX800 (Socket A) Heatsink
Vantec SF8025L Stealth 80mm fan - Retail
Antec SLK3700BQE Black Quiet Midi Tower Case - 350W SmartPower PSU

= £275

Do p4 retails come with Fan/HS?

You could get a really cheap case from eBuyer, yes I know they are pretty ugly but it'll give you the ability to build up a new machine without too many problems.

That PSU could be concerning in this case; what wattage is it?

Ok well, Dell machine, I'd suggest you cant take any chance with the case or the PSU working with any new components you buy.

I'm sure somebody will be along to suggest individual components to buy. But if you're looking for a (near) one stop solution, you might try here, http://www.scan.co.uk/mixit/ . The bundles change weekly and they're fairly competitively price wise.
