I think what he means is that Layne Staley was a well know hellraiser. He had a serious heroin problem I believe?

Yeah, he had more issues than the National Geographic.

God knows his early solo stuff was some of the best and most original sounds to come out of Wu-Tang.

It's a shock on a par with Layne Staley's death...

He was the most original MC in one of the most original rap groups (like you say, before everyone and his brother claimed they were Wu Tang). His first solo was also a classic.

I always thought he wouldn't be around for long though - he was always in and out of prison, hospital and psychiatrist's offices.
