Argh.

I have £1,000 to spend on a car (I don't actually have it yet... I just want something to aim for), and I'm not sure what I actually want.

My first thoguth were for a very 'arab-style' old-skool Merc, one of which I can find for £1,000, quite easily.

Dad says no. And he has a point, a Merc will cost a lot to run, especially one from late 80s with mechanic costs and stuff like that. I've decided against it.

I don't want one of those 'boy-racer' cars, I'm not into that whole thing. I want a car that'll be smart, nice, spacious (as spacious as it'll get for £1,000) and cheap to run....

Any suggestions?

i got an M reg mondeo for £1200 a few months back and so far it's only cost me about £50 in maintenance, and £30 of that was a service... i've replaced the sparks once and needed a bulb and a 20p fuse, that's it!

.. a far cry from my beloved old VW camper, which required about £200 every 17 seconds to maintain... :)

See if Dr Who wants to sell his Tardis. Only joking get a Vauxhall Cavalier. I used to have one. Very roomy, great to drive, quite cheep to get parts/extras for, not to bad on insurance & gernerally a solid all-round car.

There's loads of little hatchbacks you can go for, above are a few from the top of my head that I can think of.

Just don't go for a girl's car, I.e. anything bubble shaped (Ford Ka...)
