Others might say that it's better to cheat and win, than to never have of won at all.
But honestly, some games are incredibly difficult without a little help!
Buying a walkthrough at the same time as you buy a game is not something I'd advise. If you're going to simply follow the game as the book tells you, you'll miss out on much of the games charm, and the feeling of achievement when you work something out.
Mind you, is there any point in reaching a point at which you get stuck, then getting so frustrated with it, you never play it again? Surely this is the timeto look for a walkthrough, or seek out a cheat.
Mind you, I never got much enjoyment from budgetting in Sim City, but enjoyed having limitless money at my disposal to build the city just as I wanted.
(It is a good day to die.)
But, quite recently, I decided to get it out again. I made myself not use the cheats.
(Glittering prizes.)
And lo and beyold, it was enjoyable. Cheats ruin the experience of games... the dark side of gaming. Seductive, quick, easy... but it will consume you...
Another type of game that is hard not to cheat on is adventure/point and click games. I had to use them when I was much younger... but it's very tempting when you can't get around that damn goat, or you don't know how to get the fourth map piece from the bath tub...
Shame adventure type games aren't as common as they used to be.
If you have to use a program to assist you in spanking a game, then you didn't really spank it. It's like on the Simpsons where Mr.Burns is golfing and Smithers runs over and puts the ball in the missed hole.
Course, after you beat a game it can be fun because you can do all sorts of abnormal stuff and just enjoy the game rather than worrying about beating it. There's nothing wrong with cheating then. =)
I cheated once in Zelda (embarressed) but it dosen't mater cos i had already completed it in one file and done everything by myself, In the second file I had completed the very basic thing you can do like getting only wots nessesary to complete the game and defeat Majora and I didn't have any new games I wanted to play (PSX had no memory card cos the old one got the insides fried or damaged in someway, didn't have my Import DC then, PS2 had been broken since a couple of days after christmas and I had no money to but anything, because at the minute I am saving up pocket money to take with me to Italy on the 23rd)
So I couldn't be bothered to do all those little mini quests and masks again so I used a cheat!
like you said it does take practice
You can't do it because you arent quite good enough at it, but with enough practice you can.
I spent an age on that level, but I did it.
Games where you just cant see what to do, that is frustrating and what the internet was invented for.
This is where I find gaming to be most fun, overcoming these levels, rather than just cheating through it.
A game which involves a stupid puzzle that you just can't figure, however, is different. If you're not seeing things the way the developers intended, then you're not going to get any further if you keep trying, you're likely to just become frustrated, so in these situation looking at the answers is quite reasonable, in my opinion. More often than not you think "How the bloody hell was I supposed to know I had to do that!"
I dont mind not doing something because it's hard, but I object to not being able to do something because I can't see what to do, a la Tomb Raider.
Difficulty is one thing, fiendish level design that would test Socrates is another
i lay in bed one night looking at my n64 mag i spent hours trying to figure out how to finish it.
The answer was in front of my nose but i couldnt see it.
Then when i thought that there should be in game codes to help THEN BANG IT HIT ME LIKE A TON OF BRICKS the answer was simple use the in game cheats that was in the book.
Sometimes you have to resort to cheating to completing the game
