I didn't mean to imply that the book was about fingers but that people were scared to have their own point of view and would agree with what they were told. E.g. if you're told you're holding up five fingers then you are.

When Winston is arrested, there's this part where he's restrained, and O'Brien holds up 4 fingers. He then asks him the above, and when he gives the wrong answer, he's subjected to the electric shock thing in a bid to cure him.
