Well not directly, but he was put as foreman in hope he could be controlled from behind the scenes. He defied them, though, and took over how he pleased.

And I beleive the growth in the economy was a by-product of the war effort, which unified the country and promoted German industry.

Very little of the economic recovery was down to Hitler, it was just a by-product of the country coming out of recession following the 1929 Wall Street Crash. As for Hitler, he always set out to rule as a dictator, it was clear from Mein Kampf how he was going to do things. The rest of his followers agreed, albeit probably hoping they would get some sort of say; but he was never anybody's puppet.
