But the context he used it in - he said that he saw it and thought "never again".
Yet I highly doubt a boy of 16 would even have been able to comprehend the technology/strength etc of the atomic bomb in such early years of it's creation/development, especially when that was the first time it was used on a world wide scale/for war purposes for all to see.

Indeed, especially for a huge thermo-nuclear flash.
What's to say you couldn't see the flash of the Hiroshima atomic bomb from Kyoto though? I'm unsure of the geography of Japan, so I have no idea what stands in the way, but given that the flash of the atom bomb is akin to that of the sun, 200 miles away isn't such a huge obstacle.

Well, he says that he saw the flash of the Hiroshima atomic bomb...even though he was about 16 at the time, and he's Kyoto born and bred, which is about 200 miles away.
Indeed, that doesn't really rule it out, but I doubt he'd have been 200 miles away from the place he was born and bred at the age of 16.
