It isn't a war. Consoles make peoples day happier. Sure, the corporates strive to make theirs the best selling, and sign multi-million dollar deals with companies to grab the latest games (Ahem, Microsoft) but if your Megadrive brings you a smile, then it's already won.
Very quickly after I got my PS2, I thought, "this is great, I have the most powerful games console ever made". My jaw dropped a few times, but then I thought "am I enjoying this more than my PSone?" answer? No.
Graphics will get better, technology will improve, and bots will get smarter. Soon (ish) we'll be jacking to the Matrix, and living separate lives inside our PlayStation 8 s. But will we enjoy it anymore? No.
Megadrives had possibly a hundreth of the power of a PlayStation 2, but does that mean Sonic the Hedgehog was any worse? No.
You buy whatever console you want. Some have bad games, all have great games. All that matters is that you have fun.
Whatever makes you happy
But - PS2 is new, and new consoles take a considerable amount of time to program. I suppose that's one of the problems really: if a game takes three times longer to program then who is going to pay for this?
Nevertheless - the best is yet to come, as they say. So I have no doubt that your decision to buy a PS2 will be proved right in the longer term.
