Salo and Baumgartner falter as Button takes the win

Jenson Button has won the USA Grand Prix to keep his title challenge alive. He saw Salo and Baumgartner slip up and he is now 15 points behind with 2 rounds to go. It was also another good day for Barrichello, who is still in the title hunt.

The race was dry and fairly uneventful at the front for the early part. Barrichello took the lead off the grid and they held station for a number of laps before Button caught and passed Pantano, who also let Raikkonen slip past.

It was the end of the late Championship run for Heidfeld on lap 7 when he suffered a brake problem. He needed at least 2 points to stay in the Championship. The USA saw the end of the Championship hopes for the first team as well. Toyota had both cars in the points only for Panis to retire with a puncture on lap 22 and Da Matta to retire a lap later with transmission problems. It has been a better season for Toyota, who have almost doubled last year's points tally.

Renault could have come out of the USA with the Constructors Championship lead but Pizzonia retired with transmission problems. It was disaster for Salo on lap 43 when his car suffered a water leak. That's 3 races where he has failed to close the gap to Baumgartner and time is running out. It was looking even worse as Salo was in the points and Baumgartner was running closely a few places behind.

Then came the next major incident. Ralf Schumacher and Bruni were battling for points when Ralf made contact with Bruni. Bruni escaped but Ralf spun. Baumgartner had nowhere to go except into Ralf's front wing. Then De La Rosa came round and smashed into Ralf Schumacher. De La Rosa was less fortunate, as the contact damaged his right front wheel to retire on lap 53. In a 72 lap race, Baumgartner and Ralf Schumacher had no chance of points, as both needed new front wings. That incident ended Ralf Schumacher's hopes of the Championship.

The battle for the lead was between the top 4 with Button taking the lead after the pit stops and he had the pace to hold off Barrichello. Barrichello had to hold off Raikkonen, who was also battling Pantano. No one could make a move stick as they were all lapping within a tenth of each other.

So, Button retains his slim hope of winning the World Championship with victory and must finish at least 4th in Japan (if Baumgartner fails to score) to retain hopes of the Championship. Barrichello finished 2nd and he must finish at least 3rd in Japan. Raikkonen keeps McLaren hopes alive with 3rd place. Pantano makes it a great day for B.A.R with 4th and puts them 4 points behind Minardi.

Montoya needed to win to keep his challenge going but 5th puts Williams 2 points behind Minardi. Fisichella needed 3rd but could only manage a lonely 6th but Jordan still can take the Constructors Championship. Sato comes 7th and Bruni survived a late off the track excursion to hold off Verstappen for the last point in 8th. That just keeps Jaguar in the Constructors Championship race.

PREDICTION WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

There was a vote running to decide the last round of the SR F1 Championship and the results are in:

Monaco - 4 votes
Belgium - 1 vote

Monaco will be the venue for Round 18. There will be another vote about that final round in the Prediction Thread, posted on Saturday.

The Prediction Championship could be decided right now. Ineedsleep needs to outscore Der Nazi by 2 points to take it to the next round. Also, the battle for 3rd is really heating up. Let's see what happened: (One bonus point on offer for tie breaker)

1st Chris 10pts (29pts - +0.458s)
2nd Foreman 8pts (19pts - +0.020s)
3rd Ineedsleep 6pts + 1pt (17pts - +0.020s) - Ineedsleep entered her predictions first. The tie breaker was only correct to 3 decimal places so the 4th is void.
4th Badgerman 5pts (11pts - +1.369s)
5th Der Nazi 4pts (10pts - +1.750s)
6th Jae 3pts (9pts - +4.230s)
7th Mike Swade 2pts (5pts)

The table now looks like this:

1st Der Nazi - 102pts (4 wins)
2nd Ineedsleep – 83pts (1 win)
3= Chris – 69pts (3 wins)
3= Mike Swade – 69pts (2 wins)
5th Jae – 68pts (2 wins)
6th Foreman – 66pts (2 wins)
7th Badgerman – 51pts (1 win)
8th Biggie Little – 49pts (1 win)
9th Absolut Neo – 14pts
10th Azul – 11pts
11th RoJ – 8pts
12th Virtuoso – 7pts
13th Icarus – 6pts
14th Wakka – 4pts
15th Notorious Biggles – 1pt

The gap is cut to 19 points at the top. Although it's not impossible, it would take a minor miracle as pretty much anyone that predicts gets points.

Congratulations to Chris for correctly guessing that Button would win and B.A.R would get the most points. Also, well done to Ineedsleep and Foreman for guessing that De La Rosa would qualify in last place.

So, we head to Japan for Round 17 of 18. 20 points on offer for the Drivers and the Predictors. 36 points available to the teams in the Constructors. Every team except Toyota can win the Constructors, only 1 of 2 can win the Prediction Championship and 1 of 5 can win the Drivers Championship. We are almost at the end of a long season, join me to find out who will be crowned Drivers Champion, Prediction Champion and which pairing and team will be Constructors Champions!

Prediction Thread will be up on Saturday with the Qualifying up the following Saturday and the Race the Wednesday after.

Actually, I write all the results and information down in a book as it happens on Grand Prix 4. Then I type it all up. The only files I have are save files for Grand Prix 4 and a Word file for other info. A lot of info is also stored on the website.

As long as I have my book, I know what has happened over the almost 3 seasons.

Pretty mixed fortunes here- Button wins to go third in the championship, but I'm still not yet confirmed as Predictions Champion, after a pretty poor race.

I'll be back, with a venegence- and possibly some carrots. There must be some way to get it over and done with... =D

My car is blatantly rigged, it hasn't finished for ages.

I was just thinking GP, you must have a horde of files like this in your PC, of every race ever run.
