I was at first very excited about the prospect of the 'next generation' in console gaming. The Dreamcast was just on the horizon and looking very nice indeed with Sonic Adventure looking to match the excellence of Super Mario 64 and a wealth of quality software developers and publishers on board.
The announcement of the Game boy Advance also sent many a shudder down my spine and the first screen shots from the line up of lauch games confirmed why I loved games so much. I have been a loyal follower of the Dreamcast since day one and have enjoyed hour after hour of awesome quality gaming with the likes of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Phantasy Star Online, Chu Chu Rocket, the under rated Sega GT and the Spectacular Shenmue.

But the world of gaming was set to get even stronger with the launch of Nintendo's next gen machine 'Gamecube', let's face it the N64 had some great titles on it but it never lived up to expectations. Things looked very rosey indeed.

But then things took a turn for the worse and boy did things get bad from thereafter. A big cloud decended over the games market, a cloud that threatened to ruin gaming by sucking out any last drop of originality that was left.
This cloud was to be called Playstation 2 and promised us hungry gamers Ridge racer 407 with new tires and an extra extension to a painfully familiar course with every new edition that was thrown onto the shelves.

Do we need this? do we need tekken 12? do you really want to play Tomb raider 12 when you already have 9, 10 and 11?, PS2 promises to be the home of tired sequals and due to the difficulties thay developers are having making games for it, we are going to experiece long gaps between half decent games.

My advice to you serious gamers out there? it may be too late to save the Dreamcast but wait to see what Nintendo and Microsoft have up their sleeves before throwing you money do the drain in exchange for what could possibly be the most depressing excuse ever for a console, thank you and goodnight my fellow gamers

I think, at risk of entering the sequels debate, (very high risk in fact, as I blatantly am entering it) that there's a reason why ninty's might not consider mario/zelda games sequels in quite the same way.

When I think of sequels, I think of Tekkens, virtue fighters, Gran Turismos, Ridge racers and the like. I tend not to bbbe so critical of the Metal gear Solids, Marios, Zeldas, Final fantasys and suchlike.

The reason being, with an adventure game, (as applicable to the latter set) you can change a lot from game to game. effectively it becomes *almost* a new game. There's little you can do to change fighting games and racing games, and seeing as producers have an inexplicable unwillingnes to scrap old characters/cars/tracks, it seems to be the same game, ever expanding. It's this which I don't like about sequels. It quickly reaches the stage where there are far more available than you'll ever use, and when you reach that point, then why release ANOTHER sequel?

I suppose that gives him an excuse. However, I was all ready with my usual run down on why he could be wrong.

Thanks meka for the unbiased piece of reasoning you added earlier, it has stopped me from posting the usual.

Ah my poor poor fool.

Do you not realise that the PS2 is just as viable a gaming platform as the Gamecube and the Xbox?

Judge not a console by its name, but by the games it plays.

I have not been fortunate enough to play on a PS2, but many of the posters on here will tell you of the quality games that have appeared on it, and will do so in the future.

You can claim that the PS2 will have many sequels, but Mario has had many games over Nintendos consoles to date.

The Zelda franchise has too produced a number of quality games.

But these aren't sequels in your eyes, are they, as they're nintendo games, and therefore different, right?

Wrong.

So remove those blinkers, and take a good look at the games available.

If you think that the GameCube will be right for you, then go ahead, buy one, I certainly will be, but don't do it without taking a good look at the other options available.
